Having the latest, updated phones and apps are good, but knowing how to use them is better. Taking pictures needs more than just a good camera it also needs a smart user. A user who knows all the features and knows how to get the most out of it. You might have 16 MP cam but you don't know how to take good pictures, you just open cam and then click. Your doing it the wrong way.
Focus, everyone knows how to use the focus. But there is another function of it that you don't know. When you tap the part of the screen where your subject is located you are focusing the camera to the object. And when you move the phone, the focus changes. But when you long press the object in the screen that you want to focus to, you are actually locking the focus. It means that no matter how much you move the focus wont change anymore. If the focus is lock it should display something like this.

Another feature is the HDR. It is used when your subject is under a very bright background. What it do is it take three pictures and combine it to have a balanced picture where you could still see the subject below. But this feature is only available for some phones and it is not good in moving objects since it is taking three pictures. Go to options and turn HDR on.

To achieve a very professional looking photo, use the rule of thirds. The rule of thirds uses the grind lines where you can see in the options of the camera. the rule states that, you put your subject in any of the intersecting points of the grid lines and voala you have a very professional photo.

Look into your camera options and you can see a lot of features you haven't tried yet.
